Historic River Church near St. Augustine, FL
Within walking distance of River Park Inn and on our Self Guided Historic Walking Tour, is St. Mary's Episcopal Church near St. Augustine in Green Cove Springs, FL. Circa 1879, this gem is one of the few remaining, still active "River Churches" that were built along the St. Johns River before automobile transportation and dependable roads were available. Along the sloping river bank and from the pier, people could readily access the building. To a great extent, funding from wealthy northerners who wintered in Green Cove Springs in the late 1800's was responsible for this lovely church. On the National Register of Historic Places, its Carpenter Gothic architecture with board and batten siding, lancet windows and small exit doors beneath the windows make it a favorite subject of artists and photographers and a cherished community landmark. The lancet windows and the large stained glass windows on both ends of the church were recently restored through the generosity of the parish family and a grant from the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation. Come to the waters and enjoy the peaceful setting. St. Mary's is opened daily and all are welcome to visit and pray from morning until dusk.
