Green Cove Springs is Emerging
Like the rest of the country it has been a long pandemic year for Green Cove Springs. But similar to the spring flowers blooming at the front door, we are emerging.
And thankfully, because Clay County FL is traditionally an outdoor kind of place, things are beginning to happen. The wide open spaces offer great venues for all types of events, old and new, allowing people to get out and do things.
For example, the Florida Peacemakers State Championship was recently held at the Clay County Fairgrounds. Like in an old wild west movie, I watched skillful riders on horseback target balloons aligned along a challenging course. One of my guests at the inn missed “clean shooter” by only one balloon!
Meanwhile at Reynolds Park, the old naval air training base, a Military Preservation Rally and Swap Meet sponsored by the Military Museum offered re-enactments of WWII which, by the way, made me thankful that we, in America, are not in a war torn country. (Think earplugs and windows that rattled)
Last weekend, at the Clay County Fairgrounds, there was yet another exciting event, the Highland Games.
One of my guests was a bagpiper and another was participating in the Pole Toss, a traditional game of strength.
Besides the Pole Toss there were other challenging games,
lots of Bagpipes, Kilts, food and best of all…
music all day from Celtic bands.
This weekend the Strawberry Festival will be held at the Clay County Fairgrounds with old fashioned games for children and more strawberries than you can imagine.
Food Truck Friday
Come next Friday, March 12. We are all excited about Green Cove Springs’ Signature monthly event. Food Truck Friday will resume in Spring Park after a year long hiatus. This empty hillside will explode with music, food and fun for everyone. Bring your own favorite adult beverage and enjoy seeing the old crowd on the beautiful banks of the St. Johns River.
The River Park Inn is located just across the street from Spring Park so even if you are not a festival fan you can plan a visit. The park is open year round with a spring fed pool in the summer for the enjoyment of all. There is a lovely river walk with plenty of seating.
And if you like to fish and boat, there is a fishing pier
with boat slips.
Whether it is for an exciting event or a quiet retreat, start planning your visit to Green Cove Springs now!
