It all started last night. There were loud police sirens in the street and people with children taking pictures in the front yard! Thank goodness the auto timers had done their job so the inn was lit for its judging. I had all but forgotten that I had entered the Holiday Decorating Contest several weeks ago. Our unsuspecting guests were alarmed, too, as they enjoyed their refreshments on the screened balcony upstairs. To further my surprise and amazement when I came home from three hours of “staging” the Green Cove Christmas Parade today, there was a sign in the front yard and a gift certificate on the table! What a compliment to have received this award!
Across the street from the inn I found all manner of vendors for the Festival and of course the wonderful Parade of Trees that we will all enjoy until the first of the year. The official Tree Lighting was at 6 pm. I was disappointed to see that the regular Holiday Tree was dark after the tree lighting but was informed that there was a new official tree with a big white star in the park. Sure enough a new tree has been planted on the hillside above the new pool . I completely missed it …a real live tree among the artificial adopted trees that comprise the Parade of Trees!
We did have to fake the snow men and poor hot Santa had to wipe the sweat from his overdressed brow as the weather for our full day of events was a clear, sunny and comfortable 79 degrees. Although the pool is closed for the season the Splash Park is open and still very popular with the young and young at heart. Today was no exception!
And no festival, Christmas or otherwise would be complete without a Funnel Cake …just ask Dale, my husband. His red shirt was powdery white and we enjoyed every bite!
Although the BIG DAY is over in Green Cove Springs 2017 is not. We invite you visit our small Old Florida river front town, the splash park, and the Parade of Trees. Shop our great Thrift Stores and Antique Shops. Enjoy our local restaurants. Make it a day trip or make it two. Use the River Park Inn as you hub and explore the St. Augustine Outlet Malls and Night of Lights in St. Augustine.
